Langdale Pikes from Old Dungeon Ghyll

Cumbria

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10The classic rocky skyline above Langdale, a dog friendly fell classic with Stickle Tarn at its heart for well-trained hill dogs.

The Langdale Pikes are the jagged silhouette that makes Great Langdale instantly recognisable: Pike O' Stickle, Loft Crag, Harrison Stickle and Pavey Ark rising steeply above Stickle Tarn. From the Old Dungeon Ghyll and New Dungeon Ghyll car parks the route climbs the pitched path up Stickle Ghyll past the waterfalls to the tarn, then loops around the summits with the best views in the southern Lakes. It is a dog friendly walk for experienced hill dogs, avoiding the Jack's Rake scramble on Pavey Ark.

Park at the National Trust's Stickle Ghyll or New Dungeon Ghyll car parks (pay and display, free for members), both with water bowls in the car park and the outdoor tap at Sticklebarn. Livestock grazes the lower slopes and ground-nesting birds breed on the summit plateau, so dogs must be on a short lead throughout the fell. The terrain is well pitched stone path up Stickle Ghyll, rough stony summit paths and easy grass between the pikes, with reliable water at the tarn and streams. Sticklebarn and the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel are both dog friendly for a proper Lakeland pint afterwards.

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10

Varied and scenic with good water access, but livestock near Rydal and busy paths in summer mean leads are needed regularly.

Loughrigg Fell (Ambleside)

Cumbria

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10

Open fell, a tarn for swimming and good off-lead potential across the upper sections make this a strong choice; loses a point for boggy ground and enclosed farmland on the lower approaches.
