Machrihanish Coastal Walk, Kintyre

Stirling

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A short coastal walk from Machrihanish to the dramatic Gauldrons beach on Kintyre, with wide open sands and Atlantic views that dogs adore.

This dog friendly coastal walk explores the wild western shoreline of the Kintyre peninsula, heading from the village of Machrihanish past the Bird Observatory to the Gauldrons, a dramatic cove of rocks, shingle, and sand backed by low cliffs. On a clear day the views stretch across the Atlantic to Rathlin Island and the coast of Northern Ireland, and the birdwatching is excellent year round.

Dogs have plenty of space to run freely on the wide sandy beach and along the clifftop paths, with no livestock on the coastal section. The terrain is a mix of good tracks, grassy paths, and beach walking. Parking is available in Machrihanish village at the start of the beach, with space for around 15 cars. There are no formal facilities along the route itself, but the village has a shop and the Machrihanish Golf Club nearby. The walk is exposed to Atlantic weather, so a windproof layer is advisable.
