A mile is a modest distance, but it is the one that decides whether the first walk of the day happens or merely gets discussed over toast. Inside it, a dog is on a proper path before the kettle has cooled. Beyond it, somebody has to find the car keys. At Poplands The Lodge in Herefordshire the route to Goodrich Castle starts 0.1 miles from the gate. At Riber House the climb to High Tor begins 0.6 miles down the hill, and from Weavers Cottage in Slaithwaite the Marsden Moor circuit sits at exactly one mile, which is where we drew the line.
We chose every house below from our own listings, which you can browse on the Wildpack map, and each one cleared three tests together: an outdoor space its owners call enclosed, a dog allowance set down in writing, and a walk from our own walk listings starting no more than a mile away. They run across twelve counties, from Oxwich to the edge of Alnwick, and from a cabin for two up to a nine bedroom house for eighteen. The point of all of them is the same: the car stays where you left it on arrival.
Riber House, Derbyshire

Riber House asks for the steepest morning in this guide. It stands high at Starkholmes looking over Matlock and the valley, seven bedrooms and five bathrooms for fourteen, with a hot tub set on the patio and a lawn that is properly shut in all the way round. A downstairs bedroom with a bathroom beside it spares anyone, two legged or four, who would rather not do stairs after a day on the hill.
From the house, Matlock Bath and High Tor Circular starts 0.6 miles away, and High Tor is the reason to do it: a limestone cliff that rises straight out of the Derwent, with paths across the top and a sheer drop on the far side that is a place for a lead rather than a recall test. Riber Castle, a Victorian shell, sits on the hill behind the house for a shorter outing. The catch is the ratio. Fourteen people share a two dog allowance, so a big party with several dogs will have to leave some at home.
- Sleeps: 14
- Dogs welcome: 2
- Nearest walk: Matlock Bath and High Tor Circular, 0.6 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, lawn and patio around the hot tub
- Best for: A large family with no more than two dogs and an appetite for a steep morning
Duck Cottage - Grewelthorpe, North Yorkshire

Two people and two dogs is the whole arrangement at Duck Cottage, and it is a rare one. Plenty of one bedroom cottages stop at a single dog. This one sits on the village street at Grewelthorpe with an enclosed garden at the front and a private patio at the back, a wood burner in the beamed room downstairs and a king bedroom upstairs with a deep bath. There is an outhouse for bikes and a freezer.
The Masham and the River Ure Walk begins 0.8 miles from the cottage, and Hackfall also begins within a mile: a hundred acres of wooded gorge above the Ure, laid out as a Georgian pleasure ground and then abandoned, so follies and cascades turn up among the trees on the way down to the water. Masham lies north over the river with its market square. What the cottage lacks is a drive. Parking is on the street, which in a small village is usually easy, though not always.
- Sleeps: 2
- Dogs welcome: 2
- Nearest walk: Masham and the River Ure Walk, 0.8 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, at the front, with a patio behind
- Best for: A couple travelling with two dogs who keep being turned away by one bedroom cottages
Ravenslaw House, Northumberland

Ravenslaw House dates from 1892, when it went up for the Alnwick tackle maker William Hardy, and today it puts eighteen guests in nine bedrooms with nine bathrooms. Four dogs are allowed, which is the most of any house here. A gate at the side leads into the enclosed garden, three bedrooms sit at ground level, and the separate rooms downstairs mean four dogs and eighteen people need never pile into a single room.
Nearest of the marked routes, Alnwick Pastures and River Aln Walk, sets off 0.8 miles away, following the Aln out through pasture towards the sea, and Hulne Park behind the town adds miles of estate walking on top of it. Alnwick itself is downhill from the house, with the castle above the town and Barter Books in the old station, so every walk ends with the same climb back up. Alnmouth Beach is 3.4 miles off, so reaching the sand means the car, not the lead.
- Sleeps: 18
- Dogs welcome: 4
- Nearest walk: Alnwick Pastures and River Aln Walk, 0.8 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, through the side gate
- Best for: A milestone gathering with four dogs between them
The Pilot House - Polruan, Cornwall

Five bedrooms over three floors above Polruan, with the living room at the top where the harbour view is widest. The Pilot House sleeps ten and takes three dogs, and the ground arrangements are sound: a secure lawn, a patio, an outdoor shower at the back for rinsing a dog before it comes inside, and a tiled hall with room for boots. The main bedroom on the middle floor has a walk in wet room for anyone who would rather not climb.
The Fowey to Polkerris Coastal Walk starts 0.6 miles away, across the harbour, which means the day begins with the ten minute passenger ferry across to Fowey. From there the route runs past St Catherine's Castle and round to Polkerris, while the Hall Walk follows the estuary through woods and is the shadier choice for a dog on a warm day. Polruan itself is stepped all the way down to its quay, so anyone with a stiff old dog should weigh the walk back up before booking.
- Sleeps: 10
- Dogs welcome: 3
- Nearest walk: Fowey to Polkerris Coastal Walk, 0.6 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, a landscaped garden with a secure lawn
- Best for: A mixed age group happy to start the walking day on a ferry
Bro Epynt, Powys

Bro Epynt is the one house in this guide where the town is as near as the walking. It sits on the edge of Brecon with everything 0.5 miles down the road, sleeps six across three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and has enclosed gardens on more than one side of the building. A sunroom opens to the patio and its barbecue, and a utility room takes the dog on the way back in.
The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal: Brecon Basin to Brynich Aqueduct path begins 0.6 miles off, a level towpath walk out of the town basin. North of Brecon the land rises to Mynydd Epynt, a range the Army took in 1940 and still holds, with a right of way traced around its boundary. Stick to that path rather than the range itself. The firm limit here is one dog, so a household with two needs to look elsewhere.
- Sleeps: 6
- Dogs welcome: 1
- Nearest walk: Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal: Brecon Basin to Brynich Aqueduct, 0.6 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, on more than one side of the house
- Best for: Six people and a single dog who want canal walking and town pubs without moving the car
Poppy's Nook, Cumbria

Poppy's Nook is small and knows it. It sleeps three in a double and a single high on the steep side of Grange over Sands, yet it takes two dogs, and the kitchen doors open onto an enclosed yard with a heater for the evenings. The wood burner is where both dogs will end up, and the bathroom pairs a roll top bath with a wet room shower, useful after the sands. A dressing room doubles as a place to work.
The Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands route starts 0.5 miles from the door, and Eggerslack Wood begins behind the town, ten minutes on foot, where a dog can come off the lead. The house is high enough to look over the roofs to the estuary, which is lovely from the window and less so at the end of a long walk, because every route home finishes uphill. Three people is the ceiling, so this suits a couple or a small family rather than friends sharing.
- Sleeps: 3
- Dogs welcome: 2
- Nearest walk: Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands, 0.5 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, an enclosed yard off the kitchen
- Best for: A couple with two dogs who want a fell top and the estuary from the same front door
Stanwell Barn, Isle of Wight

Bembridge is the far eastern end of the island, with water on three sides, so walks from here head for the coast. Stanwell Barn sleeps eight in four bedrooms with three bathrooms, has an enclosed garden with outdoor dining at the back, and keeps a pool table and a bar billiards table indoors. A downstairs bedroom keeps its own bathroom, and that counts for a lot here because another room is up a spiral staircase that no dog will follow.
The Culver Down and the Yarborough Monument walk starts 0.6 miles away, and St Helens Beach is 1.6 miles round the harbour, where the duver runs down to the sand as dune and rough grass. Yaverland and Sandown Bay open beyond it. The allowance needs reading carefully, though: the owners take one large dog or two small to medium ones, so two big dogs will not be accepted even though the listing says two.
- Sleeps: 8
- Dogs welcome: 2 (one large, or two small to medium)
- Nearest walk: Culver Down and the Yarborough Monument, 0.6 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, with outdoor dining and a barbecue
- Best for: Eight friends with one big dog, or a pair of smaller ones, and an island to walk
Llain Delyn Lodge, Anglesey

The garden at Llain Delyn Lodge is landscaped and secure behind gates, which matters more than usual in a house of fourteen where doors get left open all week. Five bedrooms each have a bathroom, the open plan living space has bi-fold doors straight onto the garden, and a games room in the garage gives part of the party somewhere else to be. Three dogs are allowed.
The Red Wharf Bay Coastal Loop begins 0.7 miles away, circling a bay that drains to a tidal flat for most of a mile and fills again, so the walk changes with the hour you take it. The coast path carries on round the island both ways, Benllech is the next village for sand, and Beaumaris lies south along the strait. Our nearest listed dog beach, though, is Traeth Lligwy at 3.7 miles, so a beach day here is a drive and the bay below the windows is for walking rather than swimming.
- Sleeps: 14
- Dogs welcome: 3
- Nearest walk: Red Wharf Bay Coastal Loop, 0.7 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, landscaped and secure behind gates
- Best for: An extended family with three dogs who want the whole bay in view from the terrace
Meadow View House, County Durham

Meadow View House is one of the few big houses where the dogs were clearly planned in from the start. A purpose built alcove sits beside the kitchen island, a boot room next door dries coats and dogs before either reaches a carpet, and the lawned garden is enclosed with mature trees, a fire pit and a hot tub. It sleeps ten across five en-suite bedrooms on a lane just outside Lanchester, and takes three dogs.
The Lanchester Valley Railway Path starts 0.8 miles away and runs level into the trees along the old line, which is about as kind as a walk gets to a dog with old hips. Footpaths also pass the gate, one of them linking onto the coast to coast. The house rules ask dogs to keep to the kitchen and dining space, so they share the warm middle of the house but not the lounges or bedrooms, and the coast is a drive: our closest listed dog beach sits 18.7 miles away.
- Sleeps: 10
- Dogs welcome: 3
- Nearest walk: Lanchester Valley Railway Path, 0.8 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, lawned with mature trees and a hot tub
- Best for: A family gathering with an older dog that likes its walking flat
Weavers Cottage - Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire

The owners of Weavers Cottage fitted a utility room purely for washing paws, which says most of what needs saying. The house sleeps twelve across six bedrooms and four bathrooms, with enclosed ground at the front and the back, a hot tub on the terrace facing open country, a cinema room, and a sitting room with a wood burner for whoever has had enough company. A small double with its own shower room on the ground floor saves the stairs.
The Marsden Moor and Standedge Circuit starts 1.0 miles away, which makes it the furthest walk in this guide and right on our limit. It is worth the extra yards: the Huddersfield Narrow Canal disappears at Marsden into Standedge, the longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country, and the moor above it is open and empty. For shorter outings the canal runs through the middle of Slaithwaite itself with a level towpath both ways. Two dogs is the limit for a party of twelve.
- Sleeps: 12
- Dogs welcome: 2
- Nearest walk: Marsden Moor and Standedge Circuit, 1.0 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, front and back
- Best for: Three generations in one house, with a towpath for the slow walkers and a moor for the rest
Poplands The Lodge, Herefordshire

Nothing in this guide is closer to its walk. Poplands The Lodge is a five star cabin for two and one dog at Goodrich, with a wood burner inside and a chiminea, a pizza oven and a barbecue out in an enclosed garden that keeps its open view over the country. There is storage for bikes and canoes, which hints at how most weeks here are spent.
The Goodrich Castle and the River Wye at Ross route starts 0.1 miles from the gate. The castle is red sandstone on a bluff above the Wye with a dry moat cut from the rock, and Coppett Hill runs from the village down to the river as common land, a wooded ridge with a path along its whole length. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture or the bed, a rule stated plainly in the listing, though easy enough to live with, and the nearest shop is 2 miles away, so bring supplies.
- Sleeps: 2
- Dogs welcome: 1
- Nearest walk: Goodrich Castle and the River Wye at Ross, 0.1 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, open aspect with countryside views
- Best for: A couple and one dog who want a castle walk from the gate and a river to paddle
Coastlands, Swansea

Coastlands is a five star detached house at Oxwich for eight across four bedrooms, and two dogs are welcome. The large enclosed rear garden has a lawn, a patio with a barbecue and a breeze house, a covered timber shelter on the grass where people can sit out of the weather while the dogs lie out in the open. Inside, the lounge has a wood burner set in an exposed stone fireplace, and a king bedroom downstairs keeps someone off the stairs.
The Oxwich Bay and Nicholaston Woods Walk starts 0.3 miles away. Oxwich Bay curves for three miles behind dunes that are a national nature reserve, the sand begins 0.9 miles from the door, and Nicholaston Woods climb the slope behind for shade and soft ground once the beach is done. The one condition to plan around is that dogs should not be left alone in the house, so any trip without them, to a restaurant or anywhere else, needs someone to stay behind.
- Sleeps: 8
- Dogs welcome: 2
- Nearest walk: Oxwich Bay and Nicholaston Woods Walk, 0.3 miles
- Enclosed garden: Yes, large, with a breeze house on the lawn
- Best for: Two families who want woodland and three miles of sand on the same morning
Practical Advice for Booking a Cottage Near a Walk
A walk being close is only half the question. Before you book, check:
- Which way the walk goes from the house. Riber House, Poppy's Nook and Ravenslaw House all sit above their towns, so the walk home is the uphill part. Polruan is all steps.
- Whether you need a boat. The Fowey to Polkerris route from The Pilot House starts across the harbour, reached on the passenger ferry.
- Terrain for older dogs. The Lanchester Valley Railway Path and the canal towpaths at Brecon and Slaithwaite are level. High Tor and Hampsfell are not.
- The real dog allowance. Stanwell Barn means one large dog or two smaller ones. Bro Epynt and Poplands take one dog only.
- Indoor rules. Meadow View keeps dogs to the kitchen and dining space, Poplands keeps them off furniture, and Coastlands asks that they are never left alone.
- Drops and edges. High Tor has a sheer face on its far side, and Mynydd Epynt is a military range, so keep to the marked path and a lead to hand.
Map of Dog Friendly Cottages Near Walks

Final Thoughts
A walk within a mile changes the shape of a dog holiday more than any hot tub or fireplace does, because it removes the daily negotiation about where to go and who drives. The houses here suit owners who measure a good week in miles on foot rather than miles in the car, and who are willing to read the dog allowance closely before falling for the photographs.
A couple with one dog should start at Poplands for the castle on the doorstep. A couple with two has Duck Cottage and Hackfall, or Poppy's Nook and Hampsfell. Families with an older dog will do best at Meadow View House on the flat railway path. A big party with four dogs belongs at Ravenslaw, and anyone who wants their mornings to begin on a ferry should book The Pilot House.
