Loch Affric Circular Walk

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:10/10Glen Affric is the most beautiful glen in Scotland; this full loch circuit through ancient Caledonian pinewoods delivers exceptional off-lead walking, unlimited loch swimming and total Highland immersion.

Glen Affric is consistently ranked among the most beautiful glens in Scotland, and Loch Affric at its heart provides the focal point for one of the finest long walks in the Highlands. The 16.5 km circuit follows both shores of the loch through a landscape that combines the ancient Caledonian pine forest of Coille Ruigh na Cuileige on the south shore with more open moorland and birch scrub on the north, with the reflections of the surrounding mountains in the still loch water completing a scene of near-perfect Highland character. The Dog Falls at the eastern end of the glen, named for their association with a legend involving a hunting hound, add a dramatic waterfall element to the return.

This is an outstanding dog friendly walk and earns a full recommendation without reservation. Off-lead potential is exceptional throughout the glen, with the Caledonian pine forest, open lochside paths and moorland sections providing varied terrain for dogs to explore. The loch itself gives numerous swimming access points along both shores. Livestock risk is low across the circuit. The remoteness of the glen and the quality of the natural environment make this a destination walk rather than a casual outing. A full day should be planned. The glen road is single-track and can be busy at weekends; park at Dog Falls and walk through from there for the best experience. Few places in Scotland combine this level of natural beauty with this quality of dog walking.
