Pembroke Mill Pond Walk

Pembroke's medieval mill pond sits below the imposing walls of Pembroke Castle, and this 3.2km loop follows the waterside path around the pond before returning through the old town. The mill pond is a substantial body of water created in the 13th century to power the castle's corn mill, and it now attracts swans, herons and cormorants against the backdrop of the castle's massive curtain walls and round tower. The walk is entirely flat and gentle, passing through mature trees along the waterside and offering constant views across the water to the castle. The town of Pembroke itself has a single main street running along the castle ridge, with medieval burgage plots still visible in the property boundaries.

This short dog friendly walk is ideal for a gentle outing or as a leg-stretch when visiting Pembroke. Off-lead potential is moderate on the quieter waterside paths, though leads are sensible near the busier sections close to the castle entrance and town centre. The mill pond provides visual interest and the waterside margins offer some paddling access, though the banks are managed in most places. Livestock is not a concern. The flat, well-maintained paths suit dogs of all ages, including elderly dogs or those recovering from injury. Pembroke has several dog-friendly pubs including the Old King's Arms Hotel on Main Street. The castle views alone make this walk worth the short time investment.
