Reelig Glen Tall Trees Walk, Moniack

Highlands

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10Shade, a burn to drink from and soft paths make this easy Reelig Glen loop good for dogs, while humans get Britain's tallest tree and a famine-relief bridge.

Reelig Glen is a steep-sided wooded gorge on the Moniack Burn, a few miles west of Inverness, planted by the Fraser family of Reelig in the nineteenth century and now looked after by Forestry and Land Scotland. There is no livestock in the glen, so a dog can potter along the burn and through the shade off the lead. The Tall Trees trail heads upstream from the car park beside the burn, reaching an old stone arched bridge and grotto built by the landowner James Baillie Fraser as a famine relief scheme. Beyond it stands a grove of Douglas firs over a century old and around 50 metres tall on average, one of which, Dughall Mòr, was measured as the tallest tree in Britain. The path then climbs high above the water before dropping back to the burn and a short stretch of minor road to the car park. Adding the waymarked Upper Reelig Trail through the woods above, the walk is 3.5km with 55 metres of climbing, on easy woodland paths with a few steps.

This dog friendly walk is ideal for a short outing, with shade all the way and the burn close to the path for a drink. There is no grazing in the glen, so a steady dog can have some time off lead, but the path is popular with families, so keep your dog close when it is busy. Forestry and Land Scotland flag ticks and open water at this site, and the final section uses a minor road, so put the lead on there.
