Bodelwyddan Country Park

Denbighshire

Dog Friendly Rating:7/10A newly reopened Denbighshire park with wide new paths for a dog on a lead to explore, and new views to Bodelwyddan Castle for you.

Bodelwyddan Country Park reopened in December 2025 after Denbighshire Council spent three years and 900,000 pounds restoring public access to the grade II listed parkland, closed since 2019. A resident deer herd means dogs stay on a lead throughout, though the paths themselves are flat and easy going. Nearly 1.5km of new limestone topped, pram and wheelchair friendly paths wind through newly planted trees and wildflower meadows, linking the lower parkland to woodland at the top and passing a Victorian orchard and a 600 year old veteran tree. The site holds practice trenches dug to train soldiers from nearby Kinmel Park Camp for the First World War, now fenced off after ordnance was found nearby. From the higher paths there are views to Bodelwyddan Castle, the Marble Church, Rhuddlan Castle and the Clwydian Range.

This is a dog friendly park, but a resident herd of deer means dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, so off-lead freedom here is limited. There is no livestock to worry about, and the new paths are well surfaced and easy on paws, sloping gently rather than climbing steeply. A bird hide gives a quiet spot to sit with a dog and watch the wildlife the new tree planting is meant to encourage. There is a free 73 space car park open all day at the entrance off the A55, though at the time of opening there were no toilets and no cafe on site, so plan a stop in Bodelwyddan or Rhyl either side of the walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Bodelwyddan Country Park dog friendly?

Yes, dogs are welcome at Bodelwyddan Country Park, which earns a solid 7 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The new limestone-topped paths are wide, well-surfaced and easy on paws, and there's a free 73-space car park right at the entrance off the A55 making arrival straightforward. The main thing to be aware of is that a resident deer herd means leads are required throughout the park.

  • Can dogs be off lead at Bodelwyddan Country Park?

Unfortunately not — dogs must be kept on a lead at all times due to the park's resident deer herd. It's worth knowing this before you visit if your dog needs a good off-lead run, as there's no designated area where leads can come off. The upside is that there's no livestock to worry about, and the paths are gentle and easy going for a relaxed on-lead walk.

  • What should I know before visiting Bodelwyddan Country Park with my dog?

The park has no toilets or café on site as of its reopening in December 2025, so it's worth planning a stop in nearby Bodelwyddan or Rhyl before or after your visit. Leads are compulsory throughout because of the deer herd, and the paths are flat and pram-friendly rather than steep, so it's a comfortable walk rather than a strenuous one. Parking is free in the 73-space car park at the entrance off the A55, open all day every day.
