Haytor Quarry and Tramway Trail

Devon

Dog Friendly Rating:8/10A short, accessible circuit with real historical interest and enough open space for a confident dog to stretch its legs. Good option for a shorter outing or as a warm-up walk.

The Haytor Quarry and Tramway Trail is a compact 3.4 km circuit from the Haytor Visitor Centre, climbing to the famous granite stacks of Haytor Rocks before looping through the atmospheric old quarry workings and returning along the preserved 1820 granite tramway. The quarry sits in a natural hollow where still water pools in the old excavation pits, surrounded by remnants of Georgian industrial machinery. With just 143 metres of elevation gain, this is an accessible introduction to Dartmoor that still delivers genuine moorland character. On clear days, the views from Haytor extend south to the Devon coast.

This dog friendly walk offers a surprising amount of interest in a short distance. The quarry pools are sheltered, clear and usually shallow enough at the edges for safe wading, and dogs respond enthusiastically to the cold mineral smell of standing granite water. The tramway section is flat and wide with good off-lead potential where livestock are absent, though close control is essential near the Dartmoor ponies that graze freely across this area. Livestock density is high throughout. The walk gets busy around Haytor Rocks at weekends, but the quarry and tramway sections thin out quickly.
